Project Manager for the Offshore Substation Package for a 400MW offshore wind farm in German Waters. The substation was a turnkey delivery onto a barge by Alstom Grid (formerly Areva), designed by Overdick and installed by Seaway Heavy Lifting using the vessel Stanislav Yudin.
Borkum West 2.1 was the first phase, featuring forty (40) Areva 5M (formerly Multibrid M5000) turbines in a 200MW array, but including the full 400MW-ready substation.
The offshore substation was designed to operate in 2 stages, each of 200MW, interconnected and fully operational from day one, fully grid code compliant and with sufficient on board generation to enable WTG commissioning and maintenance independent from the grid connection. This was seen as essential due to the third party nature of grid connections in Germany.
