HAZ Workshops

HAZID and HAZOP sessions are normally held at either end of the planning and engineering phases of a project. The purpose is to ensure that the safety risks are identified and managed through the design process effectively, resulting in safe and efficient construction operations.

A HAZID (Hazard Identification) session ensures those parties managing construction work will consider the range of hazards the construction and operations of the project is expected to encounter during their planning. It will include:

  • 0.5 to 1 day duration workshop, face to face;
  • identification, classification and scoring of hazards;
  • illustration of typical and worst case scenarios for each hazard; and
  • follow up HAZID Report, including checklist for Designers and Contractors.

A HAZOP (Hazardous Operations) is a process review, to demonstrate those parties managing construction work have effectively planned and designed it. It will include:

  • 1-3 days duration workshop, face to face;
  • experienced participants actively contributing;
  • review of procedures to ensure risks have been assessed and mitigated as far as reasonably practicable;
  • review all post-design method statements and procedures;
  • provide recommendations for amendments where necessary;
  • assess if each procedure is appropriate and where residual risk is acceptable; and
  • follow up HAZOP Report, including comments and amendments list.

Each workshop is staffed by a two-person team, to provide facilitation and record keeping in parallel. Experience shows this level of reporting is extremely useful for maximising the value of participants contributing together. The process and outcomes need to be recorded in sufficient detail to agree/deny changes and decisions that often have significant quality, cost or time impacts.
